The Length Of Cable

When using coaxial cables in a cellular signal booster, you must know that the signal loses its strength when it travels through the cable. So, the longer the cable the more loss and vice versa. Because of this, you must keep its length short to maintain output signal quality. For example, a loss of 3dB means the signal loses its strength by half. Usually, signal booster kits contain the appropriate type of cable to ensure reasonable signal strength, i.e. dB gain. In addition, when altering the cable length, you must make the necessary adjustment to offset the loss in gain.

The Type Of Cable

When installing a cell phone service booster, you must identify the type of cable and connectors. There are mainly three types of cables used in the installation of signal boosters. The most common type is the 75 Ohms cable with an F-male connector. It is generally found in residential wiring used for satellite, and cable TV. Its length can be from  20 to 50 ft and can cover an area between 2,500 to 5,000 sq. ft. There is another variant of this cable whose length can be from 50 to 100 ft and has lower signal strength loss.

The third type of cable is the 50 Ohms cable with an N-male connector, and it has minimal signal strength loss because of the lower impedance. Its length varies from 50 to 1,00 ft and covers an area between 7,500 to 50,000 sq. ft. Its disadvantage is that it is thicker than the 75 Ohms cable.

The Connector

Connectors are used for joining the coaxial cables to the different components of a cellular signal booster. You choose the cables according to the type of connectors on the device or the other way around. They must match, otherwise, it will affect the performance of the signal booster. The different types of connectors are N, F, MINI, FME, SMA, MCX, UHF, and TNC.
